Health Problems:
The Argentine Dogo is generally a healthy breed. However, like all breeds, certain genetic disorders may be of concern.
- Deafness – Like most primarily white dogs, the Dogos may be born partially or completely deaf. Therefore, it is of great importance that all Dogos be BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) tested.
- Hip Dysplasia is a malformation of the hip joint that results in pain, lameness and arthritis.
- Gastric torsion (bloat) is a life-threatening sudden illness associated with the stomach filling with air and twisting.
- The breed is also susceptible to skin allergies and sunburn.
Grooming:
The single white coat is very easy to care for and has no doggy odor. Pay special attention to the nails, as they tend to grow very fast and therefore need frequent clippings. This breed is an average shedder. While the short coat is quite easy to maintain, please note that the skin of this breed is quite sensitive to the sun. Be sure to provide shade for the dog if it will be outside for a long time. To keep the coat in top condition, weekly grooming is suggested. Be sure to use shampoos specially made for sensitive skin or white coats when bathing.
